Physics and Astronomy vs Microbiology Career Opportunities?

June 6, 2010 by BiotechSector.com

I am considering either Physics and Astronomy (A single Major) or Microbiology as a major. I planned to go into Astrophysics, focus on space related research if I go into Physics and Astronomy.

What are the career opportunities for both subjects?

And if I major in Physics and Astronomy and Minor in Biochemistry, will there be more job opportunities? Is it even a good intent to combine those two subjects?

  1. Einstein says:

If you have to ask, you have no hope.

When it comes to astronomy, you have a few different paths. If you’re interested in becoming a professor and doing research at a university, you’ll need to get a Ph.D. If you are more interested in working at an observatory, you can usually get away with a B.S. or a Master’s degree, but those tend to be more telescope tech rather than research jobs. It’s definitely a limited field. If you want more job options, Microbiology might be the better major, but if you are more interested in astronomy then follow that path.
